World of paludiculture gathers at 4th RRR conference at Greifswald for climate solutions and economic innovation from wet peatland use

17/09/2025 Greifswald  From 23rd-26th September, the 4th International Conference on the Utilisation of Wetland Plants “RRR2025 - Renewable Resources from Wet and Rewetted Peatlands” is welcoming 350 international participants to Greifswald. Fully booked, the conference with its distinctive transdisciplinary profile combines cutting edge peatland science with knowledge transfer to economy and politics and practical implementation. Organised by the Greifswald Mire Centre and the Thünen-Institute, it is complemented by a spectacular exhibition showcasing pioneering paludiculture products on both the supply and demand side, from small-sized farming to large scale industry. Looking beyond the horizon the RRR2025 also features excursions, arty side events and an entertaining “Great Paludi-Show”.

A programme of six parallel sessions, 14 workshops and six excursions makes the international RRR2025 conference in Greifswald a special and pivotal event in the world of peatlands and paludiculture. It addresses the topic of peatland rewetting and sustainable use not exclusively from a scientific angle but from an economical, political, practical, societal and cultural perspective.

“This year’s RRR is already the 4th conference of this series since 2013. The term paludiculture itself was coined more than 25 years ago in Greifswald. In recent years, we’ve seen a tremendously growing awareness and interest in paludiculture. Given its relevance for society in general and for climate change mitigation in particular, we should make every effort for large scale implementation. That’s why we are thrilled to provide a platform at RRR2025 for exchange also on the latest trends, especially on how farmers, companies, scientists and even arts are picking up on it.”

Dr. Franziska Tanneberger, Co-director of the Greifswald Mire Centre and Winner of the 2024 German Environmental Award speaking for the RRR2025 organising team.

Paludiculture exhibition and launch of product catalogue: There is a market for it!

One of the highlights of the RRR2025 conference will be the Paludiculture exhibition, where researchers, landowners, and businesses are gathered to showcase groundbreaking projects related to paludiculture. From cultivation to processing these show the entire value chain creation with local and regional examples of successfull sustainable peatland usage. Complementary, a comprehensive catalogue of paludiculture products will be launched. Thus, the RRR2025 wants to send a clear message: There is a market for it!

Paludiculture in politics: it wouldn’t work without

From international climate summits over EU-GAP-regulations or national restoration plans – paludiculture cannot thrive without firm framework conditions. That’s why the RRR2025 dedicates entire sessions to politics and governance only, touching upon topics such as Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming Regulations or political incentives for rewetting and paludiculture amongst others.

Knowledge transfer to practice: workshops and hands-on learning

RRR2025 places a strong emphasis on translating theoretical knowledge into practical applications. Numerous hands-on workshops provide attendees with actionable insights into peatland management, innovative cultivation methods, and biomass processing. Focusing e.g. on Mycelia bioconversion, vegetation mapping or CO2 certification regulations these workshops will provide the participants insights that they can take the knowledge gained back to their respective fields, promoting the real-world implementation.

Weaving the PaludiNet for Germany and beyond

Contributions from peatlands of West Kalimantan/ Indonesia to countries of East Africa and Europe shape the conference’s diverse international profile making participants profit from each other beyond borders. For Germany the RRR2025 intends to boost paludiculture for those involved in several large scale and long term paludiculture projects throughout the country which share insights and experience in a mostly virtual PaludiNet.

“To promote large scale paludiculture, we need robust data with a high scientific standard on both economical and eocolgical effects such as greenhouse gas mitigation. Furthermore, the in-person exchange at the RRR2025 not only by exciting scientific contributions, but also by workshops, excursions and during coffee breaks is invaluable to foster exchange and mutual understandig of different perspectives.” stresses Dr. Bärbel Thiemeyer, research-group leader for peatland research at Thünen-Institute for Climate smart Agriculture, which is co-organising the conference.

Looking beyond the horizon and not without humour: the RRR2025 side events

Adding to the dynamic atmosphere of the conference, the “Great Paludi-Show” on the 24th September will deliver an engaging, interactive experience for the conference’s community with a dash of humour.
In a transdisciplinary approach the RRR2025 is also presenting art projects on peatlands and paludiculture. Radio.earth, a participatory art and global acoustic mapping project, lets participants immerse themselves in joint listening of live soundscapes of the coastal peatland just outside of Greifswald. There is a screening and filmmaker’s talk of “In Zombie fire - a haunting journey through Europe's forgotten peatlands”.

Invitation to media representatives:
